BlackDog Troubleshooting

Use the following information to diagnose and correct problems with the BlackDog device and its interaction with the PC host.

  1. Fix Host Network Connection by Removing Linksys Etherfast Network Driver. If the network connection doesn't work on your Windows host system and the host becomes non-responsive, you may need to remove the Linksys Etherfast network driver, using the Windows Device Manager. To perform these steps:
    1. Remove the BlackDog device from the host USB port.
    2. Run the Windows Device Manager on the host PC by clicking Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.
    3. Click on the Linksys Etherfast driver with a yellow circle containing a '!', and press the Delete key on the keyboard. Respond to the dialog box with a 'Yes' response.
    4. Reinsert the BlackDog device into the host. The network connection should now work.
  2. Fix Problem Talking to Host PC from BlackDog. If your host PC uses any software which monitors TCP/IP listening sockets (such as Norton Firewall and Cisco Security Agent), make sure the software is configured to allow the following programs and/or port numbers, used by the BlackDog device:

Note: Anti-virus software can also cause the BlackDog to become unresponsive. Disable this software if problems arise.

  1. Fix Problem in Contacting Host PC from the Emulator. If Norton Anti-Virus software is installed on a Windows XP host, the anti-virus software may shutdown QEMU-PPC when it detects network traffic between QEMU and sshd (in Cygwin). If you experience problems contacting the host PC from the emulator, you may need to disable the Norton Anti-Virus software on the host.
  2. Fix Problem Displaying X Client Applications from the Development Emulator. If you are running X applications from the emulator and they do not display on the host, you may need to install an X Server on the host. Simply insert the BlackDog device in the host PC, and it will automatically run a BlackDog Xming X Server. Otherwise, you can download an X Server and install it on the host PC.
  3. BlackDog Splash Screen does not Display after BlackDog is inserted into Windows host PC (or autorun is disabled). If the splash screen does not display after you insert the BlackDog device into the PC host, you must double-click on My Computer on the desktop, right-click on the DVD icon, and select Autorun.

Note: The autorun feature is always manually configured on a Linux host PC. For more information, please refer to Host-Specific Configuration Notes.

  4. Fix Corrupted Base Image on BlackDog. If you corrupt the base image on your BlackDog, you will need to load a base new image into flash memory on your BlackDog. For instructions, refer to either Re-imaging the BlackDog on a Windows Host or Re-imaging the BlackDog on a Linux Host.

Note: If your SDK platform is Windows, and your BlackDog software release is earlier than 24.6, refer to the Project BlackDog Dogpound for information on downloading the mpscon utility to write a new base image into flash memory on your BlackDog. On the Dogpound page, click on the Downloads button > releases/ > latest/ > mpscon (tgz or zip, depending on your host).

  5. Troubleshoot BlackDog Hardlock (Kernel Panic) on Linux Host. If you hardlock your BlackDog on a Linux host (known to happen with Ubuntu, Red Hat Fedora pre-Core 2, and SUSE pre-9.2 distributions), reboot the machine. Verify that you have the mps hotplug script installed (or load it at etc/hotplug.d/scsi/mps300.hotplug). Manually bring up Ethernet 1 by typing: ifconfig eth1 up. Next assign the IP address for the device by typing: ifconfig eth1 169.254.0.2. The BlackDog hardware specification suggests a netmask of 255.255.255.252; however, assigning a Class B Network (netmask 255.255.0.0) has been known to fix the kernel panic issue on certain distributions.
  6. BlackDog CD-ROM Doesn't Appear in Drive List and No Splash Screen Displays (Windows only). You may encounter Windows machines that want to assign the BlackDog a drive that is already in use by a network drive. When you insert the BlackDog into the host, no CD-ROM drive appears in the drive list (for example, in My Computer, or Windows Explorer) and no such splash screen displays. To remedy this problem, re-assign the highest available drive letter (such as Y or Z) to the mapped network drive, and then remove and reinsert the BlackDog device into the host USB port. The CD-ROM drive should appear in the drive list and the BlackDog splash screen should display. For more information, refer to the Microsoft Support article, "New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer".
